A mother takes her calf on a journey to show her the ropes of speeding through the wake of a boat and the ocean waves. She has many tricks and lessons to teach her young before she reaches maturity.
The dark grey or black backs of these dolphins would fool some people into thinking they were torpedoes as their speed can reach between 15 to 25 mph. If pacific white sided dolphins are in the right mood and a vessel goes speeding by they will make every effort to catch up so they can enjoy some leisurely play time in the wake of the boat.
Females usually have their first calf between 7-9 years of age after a 12 month gestation period. Mothers will nurse their cute little torpedoes for about 8-10 months and then take a break for about 3 years before becoming pregnant again meaning females give birth about every 4.5 to 5 years.
